not sure how these work. I know when I tried to get a remote start for my BMW and Land Rover a couple of years ago, went to 3 places and it was well over $1000 because of the bypass modules etc.

Would be nice if you could find a quality one that actually worked with the D4 - and didn't screw anything else up...

Just had this done to my 2013 A8L 4.0. Went with a Compustar/Drone mobile unit. Reasoning was it is the same as I have on my other car and could operate both vehicles from the same Iphone app. ( never really cared about doing it from the fob, just remotely from away from the car ). Had good luck/reliability in the other car for the past 2 years. The authorized dealer in my area is Best Buy, which kind of made me uneasy to having them install anything. Talked to the tech beforehand and everything went off without an issue. Cost was around $400 for the unit with install. Drone subscription for the mobile app is about $10 a month. You do lose use of 1 of your keys to make the system work. It gets wired into the car to make the remote system work.

Does that system allow the car to start without any other key present using the push button start in the car? That's always been the worry with those kinds of systems when I hear of them.

No, If I unlock the car with the drone and get in without the key, as soon as I hit the brake the car shuts down and tells me the key is not detected.

I have the exact same setup on my 2013 Audi A8 4.0T Works pretty well for me. Some quirks but the car starts with both the factory key fob and/or the Drone. I only wish I could turn on heat, heater seats, rear defrost, etc. with the Drone.

Rumor has it iDatalink is working on a remote start system just for Audi's. It was in beta testing 3 months ago and I still don't see it on their website so I guess its delayed.

You mean this one?

It says "NEW iDataStart VW2 is the industry’s first complete remote start solution designed for select Volkswagen and Audi models 2006 and up."

But doesn't list the A8.

Dunno. I heard they were testing an A8 but I don't have any deep inside knowledge. This might be it though and maybe they are testing an A8 now to add a current model to this starter? For now, I'm getting by with my current setup.

I wish I didn't have to lose a key to have a remote start.
