Smooth-Quiet Tire Question
First, despite the fact I just bought a 2011 Audi A8L, I don't have a ton of money to play with. I got it because I have some spine/neck/head issues that call for fully-adjustable support and a smooth ride. This A8L is the best I can afford to own, which gives me what I need. I worked an "as-is" deal with the local dealership and can do most of the work myself, or with the help of my son, as it's mostly normal wear-and-tear stuff. I love the car and hope I can drive it for a long time!
That said, I will need a new set of tires before too long and can't spend a grand+ doing it. Does anyone have experience driving/riding on the Cooper CS5 Ultra Touring or the General AltiMAX RT43? Tire Rack and their customers rate them quite well overall and really good for comfort and noise. Handling is secondary for me, but still a factor. I'd appreciate some first-hand comments and advice.
The fact that both of these are under $150 each is great for me and my budget. I'm leaning toward Tires Plus and their lifetime rotation/balancing/alignment and road-hazard package, by the way. My driving is mostly stop-n-go city stuff, with some long-distance highway cruises - 300- to 1,800-mile round trips, with "touristy stuff" and visiting at the far ends. Occasional high-speed sprints, just to keep those pesky kids in their place.

You kind of answered your own question. If you are limited by budget you have the options in front of you.
I recently purchased 2 sets of tires... one for winter and one for my summer set up and I found nothing under $1,000 that was decent. (and that was at-cost vendor pricing).
These vehicles are not cheap to maintain. Check out front rotor prices!

I've found the customer reviews on Tirerack to be fairly accurate, so if you think they meet your needs, at that price, it is hard to go wrong. Does Tires Plus include Road Force balancing? Just curious as my overly sensitive hands too easily detect any shimmy in the wheel, so I get all of my vehicles tires balanced using a Road Force machine. Luckily, there is one in my very small town:>)

It says you are in Nebraska, so that means you also need a tire that is good in the snow. So, the best snow performance in an all season tire that I have ever experienced , and as good as the best rain tire...and I think their enormous popularity would confirm...is the Conti DWS. And it is one of the very highest Tire Rack rated tires for smooth and quiet. I have had two sets.
My current tires are THE top rated smooth and quiet tire and did just fine in the KC snow this winter. And they also have the highest wet performance of any tire in their category. I speak of Pirelli's Alll Season PLUS tire.
Dont buy lesser tires because just they cost less money.....wait a bit and save up 'till you can spend a bit more for a set of one of those I mentioned. They are not the most expensive tires in the Ultra High Performance All Season category by any means. Lesser tires turn to s**t after 10,000 miles; which is to say that they get noisy (if the tread pattern wasnt inherently noisy by design to start with). And they wont be good in the rain which is the safety threat one faces most often tire-wise.

My advice is call Tire Rack and ask for Damon. He has been very helpful over the last 18 years helping me with tires for Porsches, Audi, Lexus, Toyota, BMW and 3/4 Ton diesel Chevy truck. All not mine, but all within the family. He isn't just a salesman, he is a knowledgeable car guy.
