Considering Diesel

Considering Diesel
I'm looking at a 2014 diesel A8L. The car is used and has low miles with nice options. It's been in stock a while, so the dealer is motivated. Are the diesel A8s unpopular? This car is silver with a black interior and it's listed at $79,000.
I've driven the V8 and found that to be quite nice, so my alternative is at least $15K more expensive. I've never had a diesel automobile, but the attractive price has me interested. The car's MSRP was $93000.

I think diesel is still a bit 'foreign' to most Americans, but is making headway finally.
My next A8 will likely be diesel but I'm waiting for a larger engine.

I've had my TDI A6 for a month and a half now and love it. I had test-driven the A8 TDI before the A6's were out and found it to move the A8 with no problem. Was just reading Motor Trend's new 2014-2015 cars edition and it concluded that "the turbocharged diesel V6 might be the perfect engine for the A8". I've yet to read a bad review of the 3.0 TDI in either a magazine or on these forums. See if the dealer will let you take the car for a day-long test drive and if you like it, I'd say go for it!

I just bought a 2014 A8L TDI two days ago. I have been driving BMW's with V8's for the past decade. I traded in a 2013 650i Gran Coupe for this car...
I love the power of the last two twin-turbo V8's (N62 and N62TU respectively) I've owned, but loathed the gas mileage and shaky reliability.
I walked into the Audi dealer looking for a used A8L with the 4.0T but ended up loving and being totally surprised by the 2014 diesel. Going from 450hp/500tq to whatever this car has (much less) made me nervous because I love passing power, but this car has failed to disappoint. With the 400ft/lbs of torque I've got power right where I need it; from a start. With the combination of the quattro, I have zero issues moving this beast around.
I've not yet experienced quite the mileage they brag about in the dealership, but after only 200 miles and doing mostly street driving, I'm still happy. I got sick of having to fill up with premium every 250 miles in the 650. I imagine I will get in excess of 400 before this car gets thirsty.
If asked, I would definitely recommend the TDI - 3 liters sounds small, but this car really holds its own.
