Is there any symbol/light/idiot bulb....anything that comes on to let you know the engine is in deactivation mode? I saw a blurb on it reading the owners manual at 3:00am but cannot recall or find it now.

Mine is 2013, but I think it's the same. There is a couple? threads about it. It seems the only way to tell is put your dashboard display on the first "computer" option (sorry I can't remember the exact name), scroll to the first screen that shows the instant mpg.
Whenever the moving horizontal bar is green, COD is on. If it's grey, COD is off.
As you may know, there are a few conditions to be met before COD could be on.
If you are really trying to feel it, on a smooth road, you could tell there is a VERY VERY slight distinct vibration when COD is turned on/off.

Yep, this is it. It is very subtle in the display. The one that has the bar graph for the MPG's. I honestly can't feel it and just see the bar flip to green (or back). IIRC, the battery symbol (at the right side of the bar) can also light green by itself. That is a micro hybrid concept where on decel it can backfeed some extra energy from the alternator into the battery.

Found it on Pg 25 - says the message "4 cylinder mode" appears but I've never seen it.

I never saw the message. I think in some other threads, people commented some descriptions might not be 100% accurate.
Maybe Audi changed the feature after the manual was printed.

Yep, no message, It just flips gray or green, plus the green lighted battery as I mentioned before.
