Default Ross-Tech HEX-NET

Something to consider if you don't own VCDS yet.
Excited to get mine on Monday

Linked to the in vehicle WiFi hotspot this will be a great tool.
No more lugging a machine to the garage and balancing a laptop on the shifter.... but also works with a USB cable.

VCHN: http://store.ross-tech.com/shop/VCHN.html

The HEX-NET WiFi Interface with VCDS-Mobile® built in will turn most smart devices with WiFi and a web browser into a factory level diagnostic tool for VW, Audi, Seat or Skoda automobiles. It will also work with VCDS running on a Windows® PC

Just a quick review of that second video shows a HUGE security flaw if you happen to leave that dongle in the car while driving around... it's broadcasting a wifi signal that anyone can join. And the default password to the dongle's application is "password" so all I need to do is find the wifi, connect with my laptop, hit 192.168.0.1 and login with 'password' and then proceed to funkify the coding of some modules, etc.

Am I getting this right?

You are not able to do coding unless infrastructure mode is functional.

I would think people would immediately change the password as I did.
Those who won't probably don't lock their vehicles, have 1234 as PIN, admin/admin on their routers, and abc123 as their passwords elsewhere

I agree. At the same time, one could hope that someone savvy enough to use VCDS would also understand basic password security.

Once you get it working, let us know how it works out for you. For now, I only see the unlimited version at $499. Supposedly, per the FAQs, there will be a $399 personal version limited to 10 VINs. Also, I'm curious when the pre-announced IOS app will be available as is for the Android. Even if all that's needed is a browser, the app would make it more convenient for us iPhone/iPad users.

It works very well so far.
One of the hotbutton items for me is using it with Audi Connect, and I've been working with Ross-Tech on that.
The challenge has been abysmal speed and lag that the 3G connection has on T-Mobile.
Works great on iPhone hotstpot though.

The 10 VIN HEX-NET is available now.
Both version went on sale at the same time in limited quantities during the beta period.
It looks like 10 of each are put on offer daily with the 10 VIN selling out more quickly.

No word on the ETA of the iOS app yet.
For now I've been using iNet or Fing to scan the subnet and find the IP.
It typically gets the same address from the DHCP server and I have a bookmarklet in the Audi folder for it.
You may also set a static IP which I may do in the interim.

Will this unit do everything that the Hex-USB+CAN unit can do? And will this let you make changes to the vehicle through your phone? Meaning, if I wanted video in motion or wanted to kill my door chime, can I do this with my phone and this wifi unit?

Essentially, yes.

VCDS-Mobile can code modules just like VCDS classic dongles.
Some of the functions like SRI Reset and Clear All DTCs are not yet in the beta version interface but can still be done.

You may also connect it via WiFi or USB using VCDS v14 and use the traditional software interface.
