Thanks,
Now that it is installed, and it sits behind the mirror, it is an accessory I don't think much about. It just works automatically. But if I take comfort knowing I have video recordings, if i ever need them. I plan on adding a rear facing dashcam, same model, concealed behind one of the back seat head rests.

The overhead console modification looks great!
If you want/need to not modify your vehicle, you can get a cigarette lighter extension cord (they're cheap on Amazon) and run it all the way around the edge of the windshield, around the front passenger door jamb, under the front passenger seat/rug, and into the rear passenger cigarette lighter jack. It sounds crude but works.

It is easily reversible.

1. It is not that hard to do a professional looking install, or that expensive to have someone else do it, if you do not have the skills, time, or interest in doing it yourself.
2. The potential for wear and pinching of an extended cable all the way to the rear accessory plug can be problematic. I was always taught that additional accessory wiring should be carefully run to the closest power source, and not subject to vibrations or pinching of a moving vehicle.
3. The hard wiring is easily reversible when you are ready to dispose of your car.
4. My A8L is a first-class car, and I want the accessory installations to look as first-class as the car itself.

It is another possible solution, but for me, I really prefer the direct connect into the overhead console because:

Here is the power lead I used (it is 12+V), so you need a transformer in line if your device is not 12V:
If your device is not 12V you will need a transformer in-line to the device. Be sure to add a fuse.
I used this common Ground Terminal for the DashCam's Ground (-) connection.

Looking to install a dash cam in my 2016 A8 and I really like your install into the roof electronics. Just 1 question, how do you get the trim to drop so you can access the connectors? Thanks

Lower Console gently so you do not damage connected wiring. Take care to use the correct bit to easily remove the bolt.
In retrospect, probably much easier for most folks, and would look almost as good, to route under headliner to the dashcam (no skilled plastic drilling needed).
