Default First Oil Change

Did my first oil change this weekend. There are a lot more fasteners on the skid plate on the D4 compared to the D3. Overall a pretty easy job. 4.0t takes about 9 quarts to refill.

What kind of oil are you using?

Actually same here, on S8. Note to file: buy 32mm socket for the filter canister. Or rather, I have already gotten one in the interim. Belly pan is easier to fit back on than D3, but lots of fasteners and several types that get a bit confusing, especially in the side fender and little spoiler trim areas.

Castrol Euro Formula 5W40 this time for me since it was on my shelf; 502 compliant. Often use Mobil 1 0W40. In my case, it had been a year since prior change, but car still only has 8500 miles. Original owner only put 3300 miles on it in a year plus, so it had the 5K change on his watch. I figure take it another 6500 mile and then use my 1 year/15K AudiCare on the more normal cycle. When I bring it in for a few warranty items, I will find out the outer time limit cut offs for each AudiCare covered interval.

Meantime, did my own 'tweener change. Also, when I went to reset the service interval with VCDS, the oil sensor field said "DIRTY." Not sure if it read that off the actual oil quality sensor, or if the time interval basically forces it to that result.

Polo,
I used Castrol Euro Formula 5W40 also. It's inexpensive on and easy to get from Amazon.

MP,
I reset the oil change interval via MMI and that worked. However there is a "Service" interval as well that I need to reset. I just noticed this morning that it's warning me that service is due in 300 miles. I already replaced the air filter and cabin air filter(pain in the ***) just because I wanted to know what was in there. I tried the SRI reset button on the VCDS main screen but that didn't work. Guess i'll have to dig a little deeper to find the reset.

Mine would not take the reset via the VCDS main button. Gave me a message about car using a different data protocol or some such. So then I went into the instruments module (where this info is), and changed the date and miles parameters. Those took immediately. Those are in km, so you do some quick calcs for target miles. With my intent to still do one at 15K, I set it for 6500 miles, which also took. In doing those settings is where I found the motor oil quality flag had flipped to "DIRTY."

You can reset MMI screen by itself too (from inside MMI screens), but I think that just does a default 10K/one year. Once I did VCDS, I got mine to the 6500 miles and 180 day target I was aiming for in inst. module, and MMI screen also then tied out to it.

I apparently remembered incorrectly. The link I posted is what I bought per my Amazon order file. It does in fact say European formula on the bottle.

Yep either work for 502 spec, and I commonly use 0W40 viscosity in Mobil1. Dealers seem to use 5W40, and since I am doing an in-between AudiCare S8 oil change I went with their viscosity. Plus frankly what was on my shelf at time to use up as I slim down "inventory" from my 13 quart D3 W12 fill days ...

I see Amazon is pricing the Castrol pretty cheap now on the 0W40 you linked and in the 5 quart jugs. Last year it was the other way around IIRC and it was the 5W40 that was easier to get inexpensively via jug size. When I was last at the local parts store a few weeks back they were selling the Mobil1 0W40 jugs cheaply too--at the sub $30 discounted Amazon or WallyWorld type prices.
