Are you pressing the button on the back of the opener itself ?
Mine has rolling codes and needed that to put it in pairing mode.

Are you using the original remote that came with the GDO ?
Mine wouldn't program with the small keychain one I mated to the opener, so I had to dig out the gimongous original that was in storage.

When I did mine it was not straight forward and one theory I had at the time was that the battery in the remote was low, if I remember correctly you are supposed to press it for a while and if the battery is low it may not hold the signal long enough for the homelink to get a full reading.

Uggggh. Didn't have any problem with garage door, but can't get the complex gate to open. Changed the battery in the remote, have held the remote in the car, outside the car under the drivers light, followed the instructions in the manual and the instructions off the HomeLink web site, but no luck. Didn't have a problem programming the 911 or the Lexus, but can't get the S8 to respond.
