Lift off whine and CEL
Hi All,
2012 NWB 4.2.
For about the last week I've been getting a fairly loud whine from the engine compartment, accompanied by a CEL. It only occurs under no/lift off, or very light acceleration conditions (light acceleration = enough to maintain speed on flat, not enough to increase it). Pitch seems constant and doesn't seem to vary with engine speed. A little hard to isolate as I haven't gotten it to reproduce when car is stationary, but seems to be towards the front, and perhaps to the left of the engine. Does not occur when the engine is cold...starts after a couple of miles / 5 mins of driving.
I'm assuming the CEL is related as they appeared contemporaneously. No VAG-COM.
My first guess would have been a slipping fan belt, but I'd expect a pitch variance with engine speed on that, and for the pitch to be little less constant.
A search of the forums didn't show up anything obvious, or maybe I'm just asking the question poorly and using the wrong search terms.
Any thoughts as to where to look? I"m not much of a mechanic, but can tackle something nice and simple....
