Default OIl Consumption. Should I be concerned?

My 2014 A8 4.0T never needed oil added between the 10,000 mile service. At 72K miles, 3K short of the 75K service coming up, "Low OIl" light came on. I added a quart.

Should I be concerned?

Check the level and add the remainder as soon as possible. Then have it looked at for the source of the leak. You're probably low on oil. That could lead to other serious problems.

Of course, I added a quart.

My question was: "Do you have to add oil between the 10,000 mile oil changes?"

You might need to, since most vehicles actual do burn some oil, just due to friction. However, if you have an actual physical leak of some kind that's another story. If you park you car inside a garage, check to see if you have any drops of oil. Most likely you have belly pans, so get the vehicle up on a lift and see if there's any indication of oil leakage.

Did all that. No leak. Of the other two vehicles in my garage (a 2006 BMW 33CI, a 2014 MB 230) have never needed oil between oil changes. Nor did the Audi in the past 40,000 hours I have owned it. That was the reaosn for my post.

I do have an airplane with a Continental IO550N engine that needs a quart of oil every 10-12 hours of usage. But those are old designs, and run at 75% power all day long. Quite a different usage scenario.

Perhaps the last oil change you had on it didn't fill it to the actual required level and it was just at the tipping point of showing the "low oil code". BTW, what kind of plane: beechcraft or cirrus? I've been up on a cessna or two.

Yes. I do have an actual dipstick, thanks to the info on this forum. I will make sure to check again at my 75K service.

I own and flight instruct in a Cirrus SR22.

I know these cars had issues with pcv oil separator failing which i think is easy to diagnose. In any event, pure speculation but if not leaking externally, maybe pcv is feeding oil into your right side turbo. Seems like a lot of oil to be losing though assuming it was properly filled to begin with. Others with infinitely more knowledge than I, please comment.
