Replacement tires for my summer tires
Fortunately it is not yet time to actually replace the Pirelli P-Zero 265 40 R20 summer times that came with my 2011 Audi A8L as they appear to have plenty of tread life left even after 10,500 miles. After doing a little research it appears however when the time comes that very few manufacturers actually have a product suitable for this vehicle. What I really would like to do is simply get all weather tires as I don't drive my car hard or fast and suspect that an all weather tire would last longer and ride smoother and also probably be cheaper. Can anyone recommend from their personal experience a tire that would be a better alternative than the original factory equipment? Like I mentioned the tires appear to have plenty of life left so perhaps the Pirelli tires are indeed the best option! Also can anyone educate me on tire sizes? I realize that I need to replace the tires with 20 inch tires however are there other sizes that will fit on the rim other than 265 40's? I thank you all for your help and insight in advance.

I am looking into the same issue.
I will probably go with the Conti Extreme Contact DWS in 275/40/20.
From what I can tell, it should fit fine.
It gets good reviews and is supposed to be quiet.
I don't think we really need to push our A8's to the limits in the turns...

I was facing that same dillema when deciding on my new car and options. Decided to buy some OEM 19's with Conti ContactPro. Problem solved for the winter. Audi jack works quite well. Changed all four in about an hour. Took me another half hour to clean the 20's and put them into a safe place. Ride is a little "softer" but OK for the winter

Question and Answer from Tire Rack
For another point of view I sent the following question to Tire Rack and received the answer from them below.
Question to Tire Rack: I have a 2011 Audi A8L with the 20 inch tire option. The car presently has Pirelli P-Zero 265/40/R20 summer times that came with car. Fortunately the tires still have some life left as they only have 10,500 miles on them. When it is time to replace them I would like an all-season tire vs. a summer tire as I don't drive the car agressively or fast. Would this tire fit: Conti Extreme Contact DWS in 275/40/20 and if so would it be safe and appropriate for my car?
Answer from Tire Rack: Thank you for your email. The 275/40R20 is a little taller and wider than what we suggest for your A8L, so I cannot guarantee the fit. You may want to purchase one and see if it works in a shop before we send the other three.
A vehicle as specialized as the A8L doesn't have a lot of options for it, so I see why you're wanting to modify the size. I only have the factory sizes listed as tires that we know that will work.

Conti Extreme Contact DWS is a great answer!
My 07 A8L came from a private owner with near new 275/35/20 Conti Extreme Contact DWS tires installed. Note the aspect ratio of 35.
They fit very well and are quiet (for a 35), true, grippy yet good in the wet and visually are wearing well.
Being in Texas I've had no snow experience, but I would trust them in moderate snow conditions.
I have no ride comparison with any other 20" tire on this car. The car is a sports package car, that I drive on the 'comfort' setting and it feels great to me... but I also drive Porsche.
I will definitely use this same tire again when it is time for a replacement. Hope this helps...

Several choices but I selected the Ventus V12 Evo in 275/35/20. They are comparatively inexpensive -so we drive
them hard and rotate often - 2nd set since December - but in relative 'normal' use they will last the usual time/miles.

Not too many choices in OEM sizes for the D4 A8. I'm thinking of going to 275/40R19 when it comes time to change my all season 255/45R19 ContiPros. There are way many more brands and tires to choose from at that size and overall diameter and section width are pretty similar to OEM at that size (27.7" and 10.9" for 275/40R19 vs. 28.0" and 10" for OEM 255/45R19).

Tyres for D4 A8 20"
My 2010 A8 3.0tdi D4 running 20" wheels now needs new tyres at 22k miles.
Before this car, I had a D3 on 19" wheels for 136k miles, and having tried multiple brands of tyre felt that the Bridgestone RE04 was the best for quietness and comfort. I am less concerned about outright performance.
The D4 car was delivered with 265/40/20 Pirelli PZero. The tyre was a total disaster. Noisy, uncomfortable and plain dangerous in snow/ice. My dealer responded brilliantly to my complaints and changed the tyres for Goodyear Eagle F1 at 1k miles foc. The car was much improved, but still not as quiet as I would expect. I would rather have something else this time, although of the 2 choices the Goodyear wins hands down.
The PZero and F1s are the only tyres that Audi currently fits as OEM, so it is impossible to drive a dealer forecourt car for other comparisons . The only other car (not SUV) tyre available in that size is a Continental Contisport2. Generally that tyre (not in 265/40/20 necessarily) gets poor reviews for wear and wet weather grip. I cannot find any forums comments from a D4 owner as to how that tyre compares with the PZero or F1. Anyone help please?
I have considered going to 275/40/20 for more options, but my Audi technician (whom I trust absolutely) told me that "the car knows what size tyres it is supposed to have" and that changing the size would screw up all the predictive stuff the car does (changing down into corners based on satnav data etc).
So I looked at all the factory tyre and wheel options and found that none of the 18", 19", 20" or 21" OEM rolling radii are actually the same.
18" with 235/55/18 has an rr of 716mm
19" with 255/45/19 has an rr of 712mm
20" with 265/40/20 has an rr of 720mm
21" with 275/35/21 has an rr of 726mm
20" with 275/40/20 would have an rr of 728mm so barely different from a 20" or 21" that was a pound or two over or under-inflated.
I went back to my Audi guy and again he told me "no matter - the car knows what wheel and tyre combination it is supposed to have (set at the factory)" and that changing the size would screw up all the predictive stuff the car does.
So, I am reluctant to go against the advice of Audi as it would be my luck to get an expensive powertrain problem and for it to be blamed on the tyres.
Help!!
