Default Discipline

Discipline. That’s what’s required to get quality MPG out of the 4.0. I have no discipline. I cannot stay on ACC for more than 10 minutes. I can’t keep my foot out of the accelerator either. I think I’m spending more on tires right now than gas. And at first that might sound like a good thing. But trust me. It’s not. I got about 4000 miles out of a new set of continentals. I’m lucky to get 300 miles out of a tank.

We did our first long road trip in our '11 A8L, with the 4.2L and 43,000-ish miles. Omaha to Milwaukee to Minneapolis to Omaha, around 1,700 total miles over a 5-day stretch. First off . . . THOSE SEATS!! They're the reason we bought it, actually, and they validated themselves quite nicely, thank you. The ability to "contour" them to adapt to our crooked and complaining frames, as needed along the way, is a God-send. Along with the ventilation and massage, they're a near-perfect seat!

I was ready to accept lower MPG as the 'price of admission', but was pleasantly surprised at the results. Heading out to Milwaukee, traffic flowed 75-ish mph most of the way and we got, on the dash, 28.5MPG. My grey-matter computer said 27.9, so pretty darned close and it made me happy. However comma from there to Minneapolis, traffic moved around 87 mph the entire way and it showed 30.8MPG! Again, very close to actual calculated consumption. 10mph faster and almost 10% better mileage! Running 92 octane and on the ACC 95+% on the road.

Love my Land Yacht!!!

My '09 D3 had similar characteristics.... one several trips from Ohio to NYC the mighty 4.2 returned in excess of 30mpg...manually calculated, not the computer, and on all of those trips we parked it around 85mph and did the "weave"

My 2011 4.2 swb trip computer routinely reads 30mpg at 80mph on the interstate running Costco 93 octane. Seems optimistic to me but even if it’s 10% off still pretty good mpg from a v8 and a 4K lb car.

The trip MPG for my 2007 D3 SWB 4.2 always amazed me.

I suspect the V8 may be more efficient at higher highway speeds than the V6.

Quick trip from Pittsburgh to Philly - around 700 miles - netted 24.8mpg, including several "point and shoot" episodes where you plant the right foot to make the gap...going from your cruising speed of 84 to nearly 110 JUST LIKE THAT!!! Gas mileage...... who cares???!!!
