There is no HSPA on the 2012, and coverage is abysmal here except for T-Mobile LTE.

My phone download speeds on LTE, also T-Mo, are typically 20Mbps+ where HSPA is lucky to get 2.
The A8, in a good spot, on 3G with full bars might get 1.4Mbps - the rest of the time is dialup speeds.

How much was the MMI control head replacement for your A8 ?
Can't recall now, but am pretty sure the cellular radio is a separate component.
Likely they both need to be replaced but I'm not sure if SVM would handle that...

I'll never go back to AT&T but hopefully the guys with the 2015 A8 can make it work

The big tech refresh is likely coming with D5 and the current facelift is minor upgrades.
The only reason I can think of for Audi putting LTE in the A3 is it's more of a kids car and they are catering to the audience with FaceTube etc, and it was a major refresh.
The switchover to HSPA/HSPA+ happened with MY2014. I tested HSPA/HSPA+ vs LTE in my area where I have strong coverage for both. YMMV if coverage sucks where you live.

The MMI replacement was in my 2013 RS5. I don't have an A8. The replacement was free, because the original unit kept losing the GPS signal, which Audi traced back to a hardware flaw. They are replacing all affected units with redesigned hardware across all models. It's affecting not only the A/S/RS5s. They replaced the 5F module which is the main unit. The modem, CPU, disk etc. is all on there. I got all new firmware and map data as a result of it.

Haven't been in the A8 for a couple of weeks, but I recall seeing the connection at 3G. I'll report back later in the week, since I'm scheduled to be back in the car Thursday night. Jake, you'll appreciate your MyAudi service in that new W12 A8L you're gonna be ordering 😆

This is all a little confusing.

I have a MY2015 S8. Are you saying that if I switch to AT&T I will get full data speeds for Google Maps/etc...? Or can this be achieved on t-mobile with a simple firmware upgrade?

There is no proof of this with the D4, purely speculation.
Hopefully as new A8/S8 owners try this we will know for certain.

My comment was tongue in cheek - most dealers won't upgrade the MMI firmware if you ask.
There is allegedly a hardware issue that causes Audi to replace a lot of MMI components, thereby upgrading the firmware.
Again just hearsay as we've never seen this with D4.

Yes, somebody should confirm it. So far it's been proven for the A/S4, A/S/RS5, A/S6, A/S/RS7. The basic MMI hardware is the same for a given model year and MMI generation, so the 2015 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 series have all the same 3G+ head unit, but some have the optional touch pad and there are differences in the software to accommodate specific features and functionality of a given model. The A3 has the new 4G head unit and the 2016 A/S6, A/S/RS7 are getting the new 4G system as well, but with improved software that adds support for Apple Car Play, Android Auto and some other stuff.

The first car company that sets up their infotainment system to tether off of my cellphone's hotspot gets my business. I hope it's Audi. I have no idea why that hasn't happened yet.

From what I understand they do that in Europe...
It is a bit overkill to have an additional plan IMHO.

I'd like to see some more useful options like remote lock, car locator, alarm notification, diagnostics, or even remote start than social media crap using Audi Connect.

Car locator is an available feature...see below pic from today.

Jake's gettin' a new A8...He's getting the itch, I can sense it. 😇

Yes I saw that in the app... you can manually do that with a bunch of apps.
It would be cool if the car could tell you though like Find My iPhone does
Instead of always-on, it could upload the GPS coordinates to myAudi at shutdown.
