Default Test Drive today: A8L and Macan S.

Ok, so broke down and did a back to back test drive of a CPO 2017 A8L 4.0 (moonlight and nougat) and an on the lot Macan S - two of a few cars on my diverse list. The Macan was nice but honestly not much faster than my 3.0. Handled very tight. $74k msrp.

The A8L drove bigger than my swb which surprised me. What amazed me even more was the power of that 4.0. The pull was crazy compared to my 3.0.

Anywa, I’m glad I got it out of my system. Seriously thinking about the upgrade. They want $70 for the car with 10,000miles. Former loaner. Would anyone consider an upgrade just for a motor? And better leather, alcantara, more room, S8 grill etc. Tough call. Or wait for the next gen A6?

It's your money. Nobody can really tell you what to do. You could tune your 3.0 for $3500 and be close to the power of the 4.0 The 3.0 is a very reliable and capable motor. Just remember how fast these cars depreciate. Personally, this is my plan. Once my CPO expires I will do the APR stage 2 with intercooler and enjoy the car ideally without a payment. Kind of getting tired of spending so much money on cars.

Would anyone consider an upgrade for an engine and better leather? Well, I probably did. But I was eleven years into my D3, as opposed to your two year old 3.0.

I note with interest your comment about the A8L driving large, as opposed to your SWB model. I had the same feeling when I compared a D4 A8L to my previous D3 SWB A8.

My advice - upgrade to an S8. I was in your (almost) exact position with a 2012 4.2 A8. I didn't think the price was worth the upgrade from 4.2 - 4.0 so I sprung for the S8+. My only regret was that I didn't do it sooner!

I agree with going for the S8. Get a 2015 for less or a 2016 for about the same cost. You get the SWB, a rare car and the RS7 engine which can be tuned to almost 700hp for a few grand. I just did it and will never look back.

4.0 over the 3.0 for sure. If they are both newish and CPO'd then no worries on the engine etc.
This was the predicament I was in, loved the car, thought about the 3.0....then went for the 4.0T......and then ended up purchasing an S8!

Might as well go for the top, right?

Default 4.0!

i think everyone is right, I have a2014 A8, SWB with APR Stage one, muffler delete, Vertini wheels with Michelin PS. Car is fast, comfortable, easy to park compared to L model. If you are realistic about it the S8 IS a great car, my license is in jeopardy even with my A8! There aren't a whole lot of places to exploit the S8s extra power.
Forget the 3.0, when the 4.0 has a better exhaust you will love the V8 rumble!
