VCDS Mod for Trunk (Boot) Remote Open AND Close D4 A8 S8

Be gentle with me......VCDS?
Keep seeing this mentioned on the forum, assuming it's a plug and play type of gadget that connects with your cars software?
Any major things it can do, besides this?
Thanks

Nominally it is an OBDII cable which is essentially a locked dongle; the power is really the software enabled by the cable. $200 at current pricing for cable and license for three cars. There are some app ones out there now, but to me the gold standard and most widely used common "Rosetta Stone" language for diagnostics and mods among most more experienced board members. Essentially has almost all of the power the dealer service techs use, and light years beyond an engine only OBDII code reader you buy at the parts store or the big sites. You need a machine running Windows for the typical version of it. I use an almost 15 year old ancient Sony small laptop handed down several times over since my regular laptop is a Mac. Pays for itself by first or second diagnostic thing you resolve and fix without throwing needless parts at it; mods are frosting on top. Valuable for non-DIY'ers too to understand issues--or even know they are there--whether in warranty for newer ones like my D4 S8--or for now older ones like D3.

Great write-up and very clear directions, just did it on my MY14 A8 and one small change I had to make for it to work:
I had to activate the "TAP" ones and "DEACTIVATE" the 2 touch fields mentioned related to the FOB. It worked perfectly after doing so. Now I just press the FOB once, and it either opens or closes. Same goes for the button in the door. Brilliant.

On my stock 2017 A8L 4.0L Sport, holding the trunk-release button (in the drivers door) up for 3-4 seconds closes the trunk.
