Looking at a 2011 A8L, and much to my surprise, no SIMM card slot. Does this early version get the Google Maps from your cell phone, or can it not get them at all?

Wish it had AC. I use it all the time, just for the WiFi. I dropped my cell phone plans data down to 250MB a month because of it. If I can't get it, I'll need to raise that back up.

Is it still the MMI 3G or 3G Plus, or is it the old 2G?

It's officially called MMI Nav Plus, which I believe equates to 3G plus.
Functionality is probably the same as C7; higher than C6 and D3, but not like the new A3.

Data speed is the same as your C7.

Wish it was the same as my C7. Its missing a few things. Audi Connect, Google Maps, Around/Top view cameras.

I saw that theres a kit to add the cameras, and even at the ridiculous $2700 price tag, I'll probably do it. The other stuff I can live without.

Ahhh, I misunderstood, sorry.
MY2011 and MY2012 have the same MMI but not AC.

Would love to see a retrofit of Topview - one thing I wish I had.

Are you sure about that? The OP stated that he has no SIM slot in his A8.

I have the AC in my car.

There is an old thread by xradman, I think, about this.
The only real difference would be Google map overlays and lack of wifi router function.

Yeah, I test drove the car today. Theres no SIMM slot. Its just the 2 SD slots. The navigation and other functions are pretty much the same as my C7 except for the lack of the overlay and router.

Side note, I hated the car. How can a 2011 4.2 feel so different than a 2013 4.0T? I just couldn't get comfortable driving it.

Hardly a fair comparison - the 4.0 has got more power and ~30% more torque at less than half the revs.
Comparing the 4.2 to the 3.0T is much more equitable. Somewhat different character, but a similar performance level.
