One of previously posted videos clearly shows there are vent slits below the motorized vent covers where the directional vents retract from (I've linked it below). So it seems that when the larger directional vents are in the retracted/covered state, air will still continuously and subtly flow through the smaller vent slits along the Audi no draft philosophy I've seen discussed in previous posts.
I'll bet the larger opened directional vents will rarely be needed in this highly automated climate controlled vehicle and so the design decision makes sense functionally and aesthetically.

This new A8 has grown on me so much, I am ashamed I criticized it when it was unveiled.
