Default 1996 A6 rear struts replacement - need advice

the rear shocks are properly working but the top of the strut (or bottom?) makes clunking noise. Need info on how to use the spring compression tool and even more importantly how to properly align top part of strut with the bottom part so it would fit right in the car.
beyond just shocks (plan to use standard billstein shocks) which other parts I need.

thank you,

thank you Rusty. It is quite relevant. It is ok just to follow the video (the narration is in German). I think my new struts will already have the retaining ring on them and also the bellows are instead of the hollow tube as in that German Audi 100 (the A6 is just a very little different).

also, I think that on the YouTube they may be the same video with English text.
