Default a6 quattro auto wont shift past first

My 1996 a6 quattro, won't shift out of what I believe is first gear. It accelerates slow which I assume is normal and then gets up to about 40+ mph and wont shift. I have pulled the code p0705 Transmission Range Sensor. I had this problem occur once about a month ago and I screwed around and pulled the relay and eventually it started shifting again and hasn't done it since. The car sat for a couple weeks while I was working on it and now all of a sudden it's happening again. I was going to check the tranny fluid level anyways so I open up the fill plug and a bunch of fluid poured out. Seems overfilled. Any correlation with my problem? Any clues? I'll take any information at this point.

I attempted to check the fluid again and once again when I opened my filler plug a bunch of fluid came out. How am I supposed to fill to the correct level if it keeps losing fluid at the fill plug and I can't add more?

Transmission fluid level is checked with the engine running in PARK, on level ground at idle ..transmission warm. Large fill plug on the right side of the drain pan..upper.

With the engine running you add ATF till it drips out the fill hole.

Thanks for the help. You think that fluid/filter issues could lead to my range sensor problem or being stuck in first gear?

Probably not although checking the fluid level is a first step always.

Being stuck in first gear (could be second gear if it is a default safe drive to home mode) could be several things. Question..is the check engine light on? If so run a scan with Ross-Tech and see what is going on.
