Default Check Engine Light = $92?

My local dealer (Audi of Downtown L.A.) quotes $92 just to diagnose the "check engine" light which suddenly came on last week. The service rep says it takes two hours to set up, etc. Is this a reasonable price? The car is running fine, but I assume the light is indicating some malfunction in the emissions. The last time this happened was due to a loose EGR hose. Anyone else with "check engine" troubles?

Default sounds normal price wise..

Thats about what the shop I go to charges to check codes, I doubt it takes two hours to do..

you can check codes yourself with a vag tool software from <a href="http://www.ross-tech.com">Ross-Tech</a> for about $200. (Comes with software and cables)

or check codes via a wire... diagramed here<ul><li><a href="http://www.12v.org/maint/dtc.html">http://www.12v.org/maint/dtc.html</a</li></ul>

Maybe he has Audi Assured... 5/75 from original in-service date. When buying used from dealers only.

Default You can do it yourself for $200...

The Vag-Com tool from Ross-Tech should work on your car (check before you purchase to make sure). It plugs directly into your OBD-II port and will tell you what the engine code is.

Sure, it's more that the $92 that the dealer is charging, but if you have to use it more than once, its already paid for itself...
