Reverse Lights Not Working

Has anybody dealt with reverse lights not working and know which switch to fix it?
My shop is getting two different stories from two different Audi dealers, one dealer says it's a $300 switch that doubles as a neutral lock out switch, other dealer says it's a $100 switch that just controls the reverse lights.
Obviously I like the $100 option best....
Car is a '97 avant quattro.
Anyone been there done that?

Kurt

It might be bad wire. Does your gear position shows reverse?

if yes, that the switch is working and the wire (or simply light bulb) is not.

Same problem on mine - no reverse lights but gear indicator on dash is showing correct selection

I am used to working on cars but I have to say this 94 100S automatic is not my favourite. Drives great but way too obscure whenever anything goes wrong.

So, reverse lights not working, bulbs OK. Shift indicator on dash is working. What is wrong here? I read in old posts about the multifunction switch under the console that the shift lever triggers but if that were the problem - would the shift indicator on the dash still work? How do you get at that switch anyway without cracking the trim pieces surrounding the shifter? If it isn't that then is there another reverse light switch on the transmission somewhere - I was under it just now and couldn't see one. If it is wiring - where does wiring run going from reverse lamps to front I lost it at the bulkhead between trunk and rear passenger compartment - any connectors along the route that should be checked?

Sorry to whine but some pretty specific assistance would be greatly appreciated. I'll even phone somebody if they can talk me through all this.

Thanks
