Default Starter 95 A6

I'm replacing the starter on my 95 A6 and can't the new starter to seat correctly. I followed the rather simplistic directions from the manual and start with the bolt at the top but there's a small lip near the bottom that I can't get the starter past. I compared the new starter with the old one and it appears identical. Any tips how to get the starter to seat?

BTW I'm doing this without removing the bumper and radiator which does make the whole procedure more difficult.

You should't have to remove the font of the car. You may need to move the alternator out of the way though.

The alternator can make fitting the starter hard to do.

I'm already past that point. I've removed the alternator and the starter. Now I just need to get the new starter in and it won't seat.

Will the original starter seat back in place without a problem? Then the replacement starter will not seat? If the original starter will install..there must be a casting flaw or difference in the replacement starter..possibly.

What part number is the replacement starter?

I'll give that a try this morning but comparing the 2 side by side they look identical.

The old starter won't go back either. There is a iron (rusted) piece on the bell housing/engine that attaches from the bottom using a 10mm bolt that looks like it may be supporting the starter. I removed the bolt and tapped it with an extension and a hammer but it didn't come loose, too much rust or something else. I didn't want to hit it too hard.

I'm about ready to give up and take it to a mechanic if I can find one that will take a half done job.
