Default Strange short sharp noise at mornings on Audi A6, 1996.

Audi A6, 1996.
When I warming up the engine first time in a day I can hear strange noise coming from the back side of the engine. This noise occurs only within first 2 minutes with couple intervals and then it is not coming within whole day. It can be either noise from the transmission or from the engine. It is difficult to say. I am wondering if someone had something like that. What was it? Maybe, I need to add something to oil or something. Any ideas will be highly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance!

Default Re: Have similar sound on 95 A6

The rattling noise begins just like clock work approx 5 -7 seconds begins to rattle on the driver side of the engine, definitley not the cats's since they have been replaced recently. But goes away as it warms up and does not return till the next cold start. Wish I could figure it out!

This is what happened to me. I was getting some rattling noise underneath the car so I brought it to the Audi dealer and they told me that my Cats needed to be replaced and they are covered under some emmission law. "Woohoo right " So, okay, they change the damn things and it's still rattling so I bring it back the next day and finally at the end of the day they figured out it was a hose that needed to be plugged on the Cat itself. Fine they fixed it and now that winter is here, I started my car and guess what the sound is back and it's the same sound but it does go away after it warms up.. By the way I have 1995 A6 2WD.. So do I live with it or deal with Audi again. What a pain !!!! Just thought i'd share..

Default Re: Same thing on my '97 A6Q

I have the same problem on my 97 A6 Quattro. it just started happening this winter. it was just in the shop and the guys could not hear it or find the cause. They did mention they think the air injection pump is noisy but there is nothing wrong. not sure if they heard the same noise that I do. hard to be there in the AM when you have to leave the car overnight so it is cold for them.....

Thanks for sharing your experience. As I understood correctly, this is an Audi mystery.
