Survey - Cold Start Noise - Rattling/Clanging - Not Lifter Noise
My car started making this mysterious noise this week. Read about in previous posts. It started one morning as soon as I put it in reverse, went away about 1 minute later. Is it a transmission noise or an engine noise when under load (in gear)? Some have even suggested the rattle is coming from the cat converters or worn out A/C compressor clutch.
To help narrow it down I propose a survey:
If you have this noise,
1.) Does your car have a manual or automatic trans?
2.) Have you recently replaced the cats?
3.) Anyone recently replace the A/C compressor?
My thoughts are, if the noise is coming from the tranny, guys with 5spd manual won't have it.

97 A6Qa, 88K, has rattling noise only when start and cold outside, for 5-6 minutes until warms up
for me it's unrelated to gears or A/C (A/C is off when the noise exists)
I don't know what it is

Re: Survey - Cold Start Noise - Rattling/Clanging - Not Lifter Noise
'94 100s Mine started making rattling noise at startup this fall as the weather turned colder, but goes away after after a few minutes as motor warms. I asked my indy Audi specialist who said his does the same thing, and it is somewhat of a mystery endemic to this model. He also said not to worry about it, so I don't.

94 100 CSQ, 68K, rattles when cold until warms up. AT, Original cats, original A/C
The car has made the rattle for over a year now. It started when backing up only when cold on startup. Now it does it until the car is warmed up, ~5+min. I have suspected a pulley but haven't investigated further. Replacing the water pump did not cure the problem.

Re: 95 A6Q auto cats replaced, tranny rebuilt/serviced....
interestingly enough my noise has always been there. The cats and tranny made no difference. ALso timing belt, tensioner, water pump etc all have been replaced recently.

'94 100CSAT, 115k, valves tap for 3 seconds on startup, original cats, new compressor.
The tapping is the valves from the oil non-return valves.
The noise the AC compressor made, was a rapid clicking, relative to RPM. The new one doesn't make the same sound.
Cats are quiet, no rattles or anything like that.
