Default Washer/wiper issues

1998 A6 2.8 Avant (C4)..

So my front and rear windshield washer have never worked. Both wipers do however. So today i pulled it into the shop and started poking around. Rear and front washer pumps are disconnected.

I had a helper activate the rear and front washer pumps via the control, both have 12+ volts when activated. So i hooked them up and the wipers wouldn't work with the pumps hooked up. So i pulled both motor and bench tested them and they both spin freely when 12 volts are connected to them.

Any idea why the wipers and washer pumps wont work when the pumps are hooked up even though the motors test good? But the wipers work when the pumps are disconnected?

Weird one i know, i couldn't find an exact thread dealing with this so i made a new one..

Very weird problem..check fuse 13..could be corroded..check the big ground terminal with the cluster of brown wires drivers side lower "A" panel behind the lower kick panel. Must be a dodgy ground or power drop..could be a bad washer/wiper intermittent relay as both the wipers and washers power up through the relay to the switch..or the switch itself.

Use a VOM and see if the 12v drops when the washer motors are connected..then without.

See the last page on this wiring diagram..it is not to be 100% completely trusted but has been helpful on wiring issues.http://12v.org/urs/1997_Audi_A6_Syst...g_Diagrams.pdf

The fuse is not corroded and the voltage drops .1 or .2 volts when activated, which is nominal.

I just noticed the headlight pump.. going to have to test that tomorrow also..

Could it be the big rectangle solid state relay in the "central electrical" panel on the pdf u linked me to(thanks for that).

I know both wiper motors and both pump motors work..

I'll follow the wiring diagram tomorrow evening and see what i find..

The relay should be marked 271 part number 443955531 ($140 new from Audi) and looks like it was replaced by relay part number 321955531A but I'm not 100% positive..The 321955531A is available new for about $10 from ECS tuning.

The headlamp washer pump should not be powered up 12v unless the headlamps are on.
