Weekend ramblings, new project, old project, other project, and junkyard junk
So I saw this A6 on Craigslist, a 1995 A6 with a transmisson problem, and my radar said 'hit'. C4 trannys after 1992 were virtually bulletproof...what's the REAL story on the car. Long story short, I drove 30 miles to check out the car and other than a significant hesitation when asking the car to MOVE I didn't see a problem. All that pointed to ignition, induction, or vacuum leak to me. Bless her heart, the smokin' hot little latina trying to be a car dealer settled for a price in my 'acceptable' range and we made a deal.
The car showed up in my driveway last night and I snapped a few photos this morning (it's the gray one):

And here's a link to the current craigslist ad for the car (it will obviously expire fairly soon): http://saltlakecity.craigslist.org/car/420606659.html
After getting a little 'intimate' with the car today, itnerspersed with helping a family friend replace the driver's side elec window regulators and motors in his 2002 Grand Am that the dealer quoted hism $800+ for, I narrowed the problem down to this: <a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f174/DavesData2/1995%20A6q%20gray/DSCN4740.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>
a spark plug wire that had been taped together and shoved onto a spark plug without the little rounded 'nut' that's supposed to be on top of it for Audis.
Long story short, the late evening test drive with my 75 year old father in law co-pilot demonstrated that the bad transmission had been miracously healed with the laying on of holy hands. This f-ing car has more juice off the line than any of the other C4's I've had the priviledge to play with....even yours, Doug.
Don't get me wrong, I still have my work cut out for me. Relay 214 under the hood in the #13 spot (Output amplifier) is clicking almost continuously, the sunroof motor is toast, the "ABS Off" light is on, and various other little annoyances. And, when, I pulled the DS knee bolster, this is what greeted me:
<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f174/DavesData2/1995%20A6q%20gray/DSCN4731.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>
<a href="http://photobucket.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://i47.photobucket.com/albums/f174/DavesData2/1995%20A6q%20gray/DSCN4732.jpg" border="0" alt="Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at Photobucket"></a>
WTF? I gues that explains why there's a different key for the door locks and the ignition.
On Saturday I had the pleasure of introducing the buyer of my first Audi, the 1992 100 CS, to one of my favorite junkyards... one I rarely get to because of the distance from my home, but one that he passes on a regular basis. A few hours later he was in my garage being coached thru an ignition switch replacement and replacing a major vacuum line assembly that had been giving him problems and that, ironically, I had the used parts for but had misplaced in our December move. After all was said and done, it was good to see that he was keeping the car about 10x cleaner than I was and to hear that it had been over 100 mph more than a few times in the last 3 months. You gotta' appreciate someone who continues to give your first Audi love the attention it deserves.
The other Audi project that caught my eye this weekend was this: http://www.ksl.com/index.php?nid=443&sid=&tab=list/view&ad=266601
Given that about half the local population here won't do any kind of business on Sunday, I put my money on the A6 on Sat night. Maybe the A4 that had been hotrodded into an early grave will still be around when the A6 finds a new home.
Sorry for the misspellings and bad links...lump it.

Here's a pic of the primered quarter panel before I started working on it

The PO swiped a family truck bumper while backing up. My autobody repair class starts again this Tuesday and I should have it painted in a few weeks.
