Default 1985 4000S Quattro Fuel sender location

Hew guys, I am going to change my fuel tank sender as my gauge has stopped working, I got a good unit from salvage yard. Just three questions, where in the tank is it located very hard to tell from manual pictures, 2. can I changed it with fuel some fuel in the tank and or do I have to drop the tank?

It's at the top of the tank on the same side as the filler neck. So on the right as you're looking into the trunk from the back. I think it would be challenging to change it in place because it has an arm on it that holds the float and I'm not sure it would clear the rear deck, but I'd certainly try it first. If not, you wouldn't have to remove the tank completely, just unbolt it and rock it back slightly. Don't forget to undo the filler neck from the car's body as well.

Rog, thanks, I looked online and found some pictures of the tank and it looks like you are correct, I looked in the trunk and not sure how to get all the foam padding down without damaging it but will work on it later today.

Rog, you were very close, you just have to remove trunk foam padding and hold it down to the floor of the trunk, then rotate the sending unit with a hammer and a punch and all good. Just twist a little and remove. You do not have to do anything with filler neck as you do not loosen the tank. For some reason, and it could be the rubber o-ring it is hard to get the new unit to drop into the slots but persevere and it will drop in. It looks like the problem with the old unit was the arm was slightly siezed so it might end up be a spare.
