Default 1987 GT Coupe Starter replacement

Hi all,

I'm in the process of getting my 87 GT Coupe back in running order. I've owned it since 2015, and it hasnt ran since 2003. Ive flushed and changed all fluids, and put in a new battery. No start or crank from that. Since then I've put in an order for a new starter but thought I'd check to see if the old one in the car was getting any power. I bought one of those circuit test lights in order to see. As of today the car is up on stands, but I cannot locate the starter under it. I'm convinced it's missing as I dont know the previous owner or repair history, and theres some other parts missing from it as well. I've checked the whole passenger underside and have not been able to locate it. Theres one spot where it looks like it could potentially fit into but none of the wires that should be there are there. I'll add some photos soon.

That would definitely be the problem if that's the case! It's hard to miss, it'll be right under the exhaust manifold where the engine meets the transmission. The wiring is pretty simple if that's missing as well. Also, if you get a new starter make sure they test it before you leave the store. You'll save yourself some grief.

Thanks Rog,

thats where I was looking and I just went back and double checked. It’s got to be missing. Included with this post are some pictures of where I’m thinking the starter goes. There’s a thick yellow wire that looks chopped off as well as 2 thin red wires that don’t look to be affiliated with a starter connection. Is this the correct spot? And if so are these the correct connecting wires? Thanks so much.

If it were me, I’d put the shifter in 5th gear and push the car to see if engine even rotates before buying anything.

This is only if you acquired it in 2015 and never heard it run since ownership.

Before it was bought the test with turning the crankshaft pulley with the breaker bar was done on it and it turns so hopefully the engine is alright.

That's definitely where the starter goes, it engages with those teeth on the flywheel to turn the engine. Looks like you have all the wires. The thick one is direct from the battery.

Hi,

the new starter has shipped so I’m ready to put it in. I had it tested and it’s good. The remaining issue is the top and bottom mounting bolts I need to be able to hold it in. I called audi and spoke to parts, they said they are not able to order them. I then went to Autozone and they do not have the mounting bolts for it either. While I was there I bought a set of Universal starter mounting bolts. I tried but they are a little bit to small. Does anybody have any recommendations as to where I can find them? I suppose I can look at Lowe’s or Home Depot.
