You can put any Audi or VW engine you want in there, with varying degrees of work. 
For something that more or less drops in, the MC code engine that you're thinking of is the way to go.
I would get on car-part.com and do some searching. You'll be looking for an engine from an 86-88 5000 (or 89+ 200 for the later version of the same engine). That's how I found mine. Shouldn't cost much more than $300-400, though it'll depend on whether you have to pull it yourself or not. Make sure you use my checklist (link above) to get everything you need from the donor car.
