86 Coupe GT Timing belt
Did a full service on my car and drove for ten minutes before I heard a horribe rattle and squeel. Shut off car and popped hood, undid cam belt cover to find the timing belt shredded and barely hanging on. Tried starting to move it into a parking space and it jumped time. Does anyone know if these are interference motors, and if so, am I likely to have done big damage with the torque of the starter?

The valves 'float' (don't stike the pistons) so those should be ok...
I've moved my car with the starter a couple times and didn't break anything.
There are extremely tough engines so it should be fine by just installing a new belt.
Just curious, what brand belt did you use. I always use Audi belts (just because I'm certain of the fitment and quality).

You're fine. Here's a list of Audi motors showing interference or not
As long as it's still the stock '86 CGT KX motor.
If somehthing else has been swapped in, check the list.

http://www.audifans.com/kb/Engine_codes</a

Re: The valves 'float' (don't stike the pistons) so those should be ok...
I just bought it and had planned on getting everything up and going......Here is the scary thing. Although the car had good service records i.e. extensive, I think this was the original 177,000 mile timing belt. I am putting on the conti belt now. Kepping my fingers crossed. I am replaceing the idler pully and crank seal too. Opting out on the water pupm, which I will do in a couple months ($$$)

Re: Easier to do everything "while you're in there"
Oh yeah, I know. I did'nt even have the money really to get the parts that I did. It's my daily driver....so, I'll have to gut her again when I can get the water pump. I figured I'd do the crank seal so that I didn't have to take the crank pulley off again next time.

Since you're doing the crank shaft seal, don't forget the springamajig like I did.
