Accelerator cable bushings DIY
I just replaced the accelerator bushings in the 85 4000q and thought I'd share my experience. The part# for the bushing is (431-721-559) You will need 2 of them. Even if both aren't bad go ahead and replace both while you're in there.
The first thing I did was undo the throttle cable to give you some slack

To make it easier, I removed the 2 clips and plastic bushings from the pivot point of the gas pedal and removed it, then it was easy to push in the new bushings and attach the pedal to the cable. (I used a little latex friendly lube to help, I figured this would be safe for the rubber?) Note the placement of the intermediate metal part that actually attaches the cable to pedal.

(sorry for blur)Pull cable back the to the throttle body and re-clip, then re-attach the gas pedal. Done. I tried to do this w/o removing the pedal (PITA) and cut and bruised my hand. I think this is the easiest way having tried both.

Just a sugggestion for future, change it to OEM neopreme bushing that will never fail
Paqrt number is 191 723 559 and it's a direct replacement. It is a VW GTI part.
I second the procedure.. much easier than trying to change the bushings with pedal still in place.
Thanks for the pics!

how ironic..
I go to move my car so i could work on it the other day, and the accelerator pedal was just resting on the floor... upon inspection i found that the stock bushings had turned in to a soft crumbly material (like inside the sun-visors of old cars)
So on sunday i ended up just making some new bushings out of the only thing i had laying around... the foam from the handle of an old fishing pole. seems to work great! its just ironic that you posed this a day after i actually dealt with this issue heh..
EDIT: I did this without removing the pedal, it was kinda a PITA.. but after unhooking the cable from the TB i had enough slack to get it on there..

I don't think my 83 CGT has that thing that's been called the counter-weight
Only one bushing was needed, as mine crumbled in February. The cable ends in the same type of hook - but it just went into the loop on the pedal.

Now that my car is 30 years old, I'll be replacing these bushings for the second time. Thanks for the reminder on how I must have done it the first time. I was wondering how I was going to make the reach under the dash.
