Alternator source for an '87 4000csq?
The dealer shows a bunch of different part#'s for a couple of options. Which is the correct one and where can I find one?
My thoughts on needing an alternator is this. Just replaced the belt 5000 miles ago.....is snug enough but belt still squeals under initial start up and acceleration. Under hood is dry. Also have a pulsing effect with the electricals.....replaced the voltage regulator and no change. I've also got a fresh battery. Something wrong with alternator?

Just replaced my alternator today
Mine surged right before it died. No squealing though. The multiple options I think have to deal with you car having a/c or not. Autozone found one for the 2.2L for about 105.00, but I have a CGT. I believe they are compatible though, but not for sure (yours being quattro and all).

Could be your alternator....
Yeah, I had an alternator go bad in my 3KGT VR4 and it was doing all sorts of strange things. Didn't squeal, but my voltage was all over the board. In fact, before I had the chance to change it, it friend my battery on the way to my friends garage for replacement (voltage went WAY UP!).
You mentioned that you had a fresh battery, perhaps the alternator was the culprit there.
More than likely, if you buy one from an Autozone or Advance Auto, you'll get a rebuilt alternator. You might be able to save some money by taking it to a good auto electric shop-eliminate the middle man.
Give them a call and ask them what they think the damage (cost) might be.
GOOD LUCK!
