Any suggestions on a -quiet- exhaust? Local shop only has flow through resonators...
and my experience with those are a lot of raspy noises (even when a quiet muffler is put afterwards...). I know the 4000Q is naturally a bit louder then other cars of its time, but wondering if my 84 needs 2 mufflers or how I am going to go about it all... suggestions appreciated.

I refuse to use magnablow on any of my Audi's...
as every 5 cylinder I have had at one time had a magnacrap on it and sounded like a UPS truck, only higher pitched and raspy (on the 20v that was with a resonator & without, and a different style magna****, on the last 4kQ without a resonator, and then with a secondary muffler instead of a resonator). I dont want any "performance" stuff at all, just the quietest I can get it (like... lets say... a stock honda civic).

Magnaflows arent bad
they are well made and sound good. Granted, I have never had them on a 5 cyl but I have used them on 4 cyl VW's and also V8's. They can be loud without resonators though, thats true so I can see why, if you want quiet, its the wrong choice. Doesnt make it a bad product though.

Well, personally I have had some bad experiences...
Not to say there workmanship is bad, or that the product itself is faulty, just for some reason with the 5 cylinder models all I have gotten was rasp, rasp, rasp. There are some factors that play in obviously, on my 20v it had a flow through resonator which are known to be crap on the 20v, not to mention the headers dont help out much either, and thinking it over I am sure the resonator was at fault for most of it but when i replaced the magnaflow with a borla the rasp was gone (same resonator)... going back further I had a magnaflow on my first 20v with no resonator and it was a horrible sound. the stock resonator was put back on which cleared up the tone but it still had a weird raspy buzz from ~3k rpm through 4500. the 4000 Q right now has the stock resonator (340k miles and rattling) and a glass pack as a muffler. Not the sneakiest car in the world. I have a borla muffler on hand and figure I can move the glasspack to where the resonator was and throw the borla on the back for now. Should at least quiet it down a little... and more importantly no more rattling!
