CGT Turbo swap questions

I have an 86 CGT and have recently aquired an 88 5000tq for free, engine is good just needs fuel pump.

Wondering if it would be easier to swap the MC out of the 5k or to sell the 5k and put a turbo on the KV?

For sure, swap motor (by the time yhou are done) is probably easier and a better solution.

TUrbo motor has all the 'work' done for you. Already has the turbo oil and water feeds and returns in place, and all the plumbing for oil cooler. Block has the piston oil squirters.

If you want to avoid pulling the motor and you want to just swap the turbo, you'll have to deal with most of the above items with the stock motor in place, and that's no fun. Half way through trying to change the exhaust manifold (after breaking a few studs off) you'll wonder why you ever thought it was easier, leaving teh motor in place! :-)

Taking donor out of 5k is easy, as you can just undo the front of the car, and slide the motor out.

Coupe is a bit harder. You can drop the complete motor/trans/suspension out the bottom, or cut the front and pull the motor out the same way as the 5K.

Fitting in the 5K cis is a bit of a problem, as the airbox/fuel distributor won't fit. You can either cut away the inner fender to fit things (easy, but not so elegant) or can go to urq igloo/airbox setup (rotates fuel distributor) but costs more.

You still have to fab up intake plumbing and intercooler stuff, no mattter what way you go, so keep all the intake plumbing from the 5k. If you can, keep the 5k until the conversion is complete. You never know what little bits can come in handy.

For really good look at some turbo conversion builds, maybe swing over to motorgeek.com ? Lots of good stuff there, with lots of pictures and ideas.
