Lean out the mixture and retard the timing.

Default check your plugs...

Are they the right temp range for your set up? high hydrocarbons means your running rich or have a cold spark. you can check the timing (I actually believe you want to advance the timing for a longer burn (ie hotter) or try running a hotter plug - (someone can chime in here but I think the higher the plug number the hotter, ie WT7s are a hotter plug than a WT6. Also make sure you are in good tune, ie new plugs, wires, rotor/cap.

Do not do anything to the catalytic converter. It has nothing to do with hydrocarbons. Cat is for Nox emissions.
How high on hydrocarbons? Idle or high rpm?
Ohm out the plug wires, replace if out of spec. Get new plugs, bosch or ngk only. Mixture may be off too, but more difficult to check. Huw's audi website has some pointers. Last thing to check is O2 sensor, if thew others doesn't fix the problem.

My guess is that if you are not too high above the limit and your plugs and wires are old, replace them and go back for a retest.
I had the same failure recently, replaced wires, dialed in mixture, passed.

http://www.humanspeakers.com/audi/index.html</a
