Default fuel line problem...need help!

I have an old VW Quantum that shares the same fuel system as the Audi. My problem is that the fuel line return (I think it is a return line) from the fuel accumulator going back to the fuel tank is leaking. It seems to have pressure on it from time to time. So, it occassionally leaks. It doesn't drip, but produces a strong gasoline smell. The leak is high on the arch going up and over to the top of the fuel tank. I can't reach the leak without dropping the fuel tank. That would be a lot of work.

Instead of going through that work, is it possible to just plug up the return line at a junction where I have a patched in piece of rubber hose as part of the line?

Thanks for any advise.....Rooster

An accumulator should have a big line in from the pump, and one out to the filter or front of car. If you are talking about a little line on the back of the accumulator, (vacuum line sized) it is a return line only if the accumulator is leaking fuel off. Accumulator is shot, in other words. Depending on how severe the leak is, you probably have some driveability and hot start problems.
The accumulator is supposed to keep pressure in the system to compensate for vapor lock. The fuel in the injector lines boils off, and fills them with air, and the car is hard to start after it sits for 15 minutes, but is fine after an hour or so.
On the chance the diaphram in the accumulator completely goes, whatever you would try to pinch the line would have to be able to stand for 80 psi. of fuel pressure. I think I'd fix it.

Default Thanks budpalumbo....I appreciate your thoughts...thinking of doing this...

My accumulator is okay, it is the big line that runs to the front of the pump. I can trace it back to where it is leaking somewhere from up the side of the fuel tank. My thought now is to replace the line with 5/16" rubber fuel line all the way back to the top of the fuel tank. I just hope that rubber hose can hold 80 psi. Also, I could go to a wrecking yard to find parts. Thanks, Rooster
