Hey all. I've had the tranny out for a bit now. I removed the drain plug and:
Brass bits and peanut butter everywhere. There are pieces in there as big as a tooth. I'm afraid something has gone terribly wrong.
I just pulled the front diff cover off and drained the rest of the fluid. not many more bits so perhaps it wont be too bad, but I think thrid syncro is shot. Tearing the tranny down is hard, the Haynes manual only has the FWD tranny in it so I'm basically flying blind. any advice on where to find a guide on tearing it down? Hopefully I'll have it apart soon and can update y'all on what I find.
Cheers, Erik

Hello Erik,
taken an 016 apart is not so bad at all if you are mechanically inclined and know what to look for. There is an VAG manual (not SSP) with all the details. I think I have it somewhere, I need to dig deep for that.
Try google too.
Other than that you need some good and big bearing pullers or a hydraulic press, a big and clean workbench and engine stand. The dismantlement is pretty much self explaning and can be done with normal tools.
I hope that helps a little.
Ciao

Hey all,
I've gotten the transmission totally apart. There is alot going on there, but basically it's screwed. I've started a new short thread to keep everything talking about the transmission together, I'll put the link to it below. Hopefully we can find out what to do with it, but it's looking grim.
Cheers, Erik

Hey guys, here's an update,
I learned that I have an alternative for the transmission problem, since 4000 transmissions are few and far between. The trans out of a 200 quattro will also fit! It's an 016 as well, it just a later model. There are a few changes, but overall they work together. It was quite the process to get the transmission apart, but I've made a video here for anyone that needs to disassemble an 016 transmission. I'll be updating soon after the transmission is back together! Cheers
