Default Possible power steering issue.....

sounds like the pump is making noise, not a howl of a tight belt either. When these go bad is the steering sloppy and darn right dangerous? I've never had one go and would like some input from you experts. Thanks much.

Default Have you checked the oil level?

maybe sounds crazy, but my pump would make funny noises a couple of years back, and first thing i did was check the oil, which seemed fine.

A second check showed that level was very low, and what i first thought was the "ok" oil level was indeed just residue with some gunk in it.

Took it apart and cleaned and flushed as much as possible, and then refilled with fresh oil, never a sound since :-)

BTW. anyone knows if there's any advantage of using the original GOO2000 instead of the cheaper auto-tranny oil?

Default The power steering fluid seemed full......

but I'll double check it when I get home. I don't mind the noise it's the lack of steering response. Did you have that problem too?

Default my rack is POOCHED

leaking fluid...it was on teh rally car, so I just ran it until it was totally cooked (putting a 4kq unit in the car).

The steering in my car is downright dangerous now. I won't drive it until it gets the new rack. The car will randomly pull left or right, it has a random 'dead' spot in the center that comes and goes.

It's totally unresponsive, or over responsive...and has no road feel at all.

hope that helps :P

Default That sounds more like it! Turns right great but left turns are SKETCHY......

odd thing is it's not leaking and there's juice in the system. Anyone have leads on a new/rebuilt rack?

Default ahhh...

Oh right! Now I remember you buying them hahaha.

No sources for rebuilt racks, I seem to have relatively easy access to low mileage used units.

I'm surprised to hear that a 4kq rack went...they don't fail often at all (unlike the newer mineral oil racks)

Default I might need a new steering rack on my 4kq.

Any advice on how to know if I need a new rack and where to get one? I took it to get inspected and knew the boot was torn but didn't think it was a problem.

Look for fluid leaks on the rack, the hoses and the reservoir.

I just replaced my entire power steering system except for the pump which was replaced by the previous owner. I purchased the steering rack from RockAuto. I had a leak in the s-shaped metal pipe that connects to the power streering pressure hose and rack. I had the complete hose custom made by a company that makes hydraulic lines. Once everything was replaced, I made sure there were no leaks, no air in the system and all the bolts were tight. Steering is precision now.
