Default Running rich?

When I start my 4kq it spits oil out the tail pipe. Especially when warming up, if i drive it for a while then it doesn't seem quit as bad. The inside of my exhaust tip is a very smooth charcoal/black from this. None of my buddy's 4kq do this. Is it running rich, or bad for it? Does any one know anything about blau adjustable cam gears? Suggested that this might help it out.
If not, how would I go about fixing it. Will have it in the garage this weekend for wp/tb/ low temp thermostat. Thanks

Default if it's oil spilling out the exhaust...

it's not running rich, then you're car using oil, and a seal somewhere is leaking.

Mixture is set on top of the fuel dist. with a long allen key inserted in a small hole, and you can tamper with it your self, but you will never get the corretct mixture without co measuering equipment.

If you decide to try, then adjust in small increments of 1/8 or 1/4 of a turn at a time.

You should be able to hear engine idle changing when doing this, but i would recommend a shop to have a look at it if you're going anyway.

good luck

Default Every car I've had that ran oil out of the exhaust ...

had major problems, Hope that your isn't headed that way. Like cgtdenmark said, there's a big problem somewhere. I'm guessing that you're pouring a whole group of oil in, to get oil out the exhaust?

The cars I had that exhibited that oil symptom:

--Bought a 67 La Sabre in 1981: Had very bad rings, died very soon after purchase;
--Got 249,000 miles out of a buick wagon, this happened, and soon lost a piston [within days]
--my daughter's geo started this on it's first engine and then threw a piston. [I couldn't get her to stop driving the thing before it had thermoneucular meltdown....]

Really hope that there's a small problem you can fix readily...

Default That's not oil, it's carbon and water

If you had actual engine oil making it out the tail pipe, do you know how much engine oil that would take? First it would have to get through the cat, then through both mufflers...You're car wouldn't be running if it was actually pumping that much oil into the exhaust.

What you probably have is an exaust system full of condensation, ie, water. The water is picking up all the carbon and that's what you see coming out the tail pipe and spattering on the garage floor, or on the garage door, or what ever.

My suggestion is take it out on a nice long blast on the freeway. Like 30 miles at 65+mph. That will heat up the entire exhaust nicely and burn off all the water/moisture trapped inside.

Following your nice long drive, and prior to doing a bunch of low speed in town driving, pull out one or more of the spark plugs (W7DTC's right?) and check their color and condition. If they are light grey, light tan, or some other light color, then it's not too rich. If they are covered in black, dry soot, then you are too rich. The way modern unleaded fuels burn, you can't get a very good read from what the tailpipe looks like.

You don't want to put a low temp thermostat in it. Use the correct one to keep the cylinder head temps up for proper combustion.

If you have an overheating problem, solve it.

Default No heating problem

Been driving the car regularly for 8 months. Been doing this since I got it. There is no heating problem, stays cold unless at a standstill for while, but the fan works good and cools it down nicely. I am only running a low temp for the summer. I just drove to the burgh, so I will check the plugs. thanks
