Default 49-state/California emissions

Hey there:
I'm looking at an 87 5000 Quattro across the country, but live in California. The original emissions sticker doesn't appear to be on the car; does anyone know if Audi built the 2.3l 130hp five-cylinder as a 49 state (federal) and California versions, or was it a 50 state car?

Bringing the car up to California emissions standards would be a deal-killer, I'm afraid, but this is a nice, relatively low mileage example.

Thanks,

-D

they did have a specific model for Cali, at least for my 100q there was a cali model with the check engine light bulb in the dash and the rest of the country cars which did not, now its very easy to just pop a bulb into it and it will work, now as long as the car can pass emissions you should be perfectly fine. i know my 5000CS is a 50 state car and has a CEL in the dash, as do all others to my knowledge i just got one from the west coast and drove it home to new york. i know it dosnt really answer your question but i hope it helps a little bit.

My 1991 USA 100 does not have a check engine light, which will really scare off CA smog shops who don't know their business.
