Default Any suggestions on checking Hall sensor??

I have no Spark, Coil is good, getting 12 volts to primary coil wire. What is the basic rule when checking the hall sensor? I suspect it being bad cause the three wire connector at the distributor is loose and cracked. Any thoughts or suggetions?
Thanks.

Default I drove for years with a broken Hall sensor connector

The three small (20 AWG?) wires from the Hall sensor to its connector were exposed.

I've never been comfortable with my inability to test the Hall sensor's output -- the connector's constructon prevents one from connecting a meter test lead to its terminals.

I *think* that the Hall sensor's three leads are DC input voltage (+5V? 12V?), ground, and output.

Your question has prompted me to fabricate a little test harness, with a male and female 3-pin connector at the ends, and a terminal in the middle of each lead, so that I can measure voltages.

Which model/year car do you have? Later models required a signal from a flywheel position sensor to start. Sometimes those sensors fail.

Are you able to pull trouble codes? I'd bet that your Hall sensor is toast if a trouble code indicates "loss of tach signal" error.

Sorry that I can't help you more. (My Bentley is miles away.)

Default Pull the DTC Codes

Go to the following link and pull the DTC codes (Diagnostic Trouble Codes).

You can blink out the codes with your Check Engine Light (CEL) on your dash (you do have a california model). Or you can go to Radio Shack and buy a 12v LED with resistor to make this test lamp. I also use this test light to check for the trigger signal on the coil (see my previous post).

Here is some example of the blink codes

2112 (Blink Fault Code), VAG1551/2 Fault Code Number 00514
Timing (62 degrees BTDC) reference sensor
Flywheel pin damaged/missing,
Mis-located Sensor, flywheel pin, distributor hall sensor out of adjustment

2113 (Blink Fault Code), VAG1551/2 Fault Code Number 00515
Hall sender in distributor
Distributor alignment, faulty sender,
Mis-located sensor &amp; distributor<ul><li><a href="http://www.sjmautotechnik.com/TROUBLE_SHOOTING/10vcodes.htm">Diagnostic Trouble Codes</a></li></ul>

Default Then it's pretty complicated

I think that the MC-1 engine that's in your car requires at least two and maybe three sensor inputs to start. Two of these sensors are on the bellhousing: one detects engine RPM (triggered by ring gear teeth on flywheel) and the other detects flywheel position (triggered by a pin on the flywheel at about 63 deg BTDC). The third is the Hall sensor in the distributor, which I think produces one pulse per revolution.

To start the engine, I think that outputs from both the Hall sensor in the distributor and the flywheel position sensor are needed.

When you pull the trouble codes, the ECU should give you an idea of which sensor input is missing.

Default

hey out of curiousity did you ever solve this issue?
i have a 87 5k CS turbo that recently started cranking and no start, giving me code 2113, but i have a brand new hall sensor, my next guess is the sensors on the flywheel but im not positive.
