Default Audi 5kqt blower motor not working

The set up
I finally bit the bullet yesterday and opened the heater/air box on my 1986 Audi 5000 cs Turbo Quattro wagon (classic 80s mouthful). The blower motor started squeek, and more alarming when it started to puff smoke into the cabin. Eventually it stopped working altogether.

I spent the better part of yesterday getting the box open and getting to the blower motor, which was incredibly tedious, this is a link to the right up I user, fairly helpful if anyone needs it

http://www.elektro.com/~audi/audi/blowerfix.html

The car has 233xxx so I'm impressed the orginal blower motor had lasted that long, German quality!

The problem;
I plugged in new fan and turned on the car to test that ithe was working, and nothing, no signs of life. Luckily I have another same Era 5ktq wagon I tested the replacement fan in that and it works great. When I plugged in the old one it tried to spin, stopped spinning and a metal coil on her back of the motor along with the wiring loom to the car started to get very hot for the 10 seconds it was plugged in.

What I need help with
I assume that when the orginal fan froze it started to overheat and burnt out a servo or switch or controller. I'm just a bit clueless to what that is, or how to get to it. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Check the wiring behind the climate control unit to make sure they are not broken/melted/or compromised in any way. Probably the wiring went first, and actually shorted out the blower motor. The gauge of wire that was used originally was probably 18....when it should have been 12 or lower. If not....check the blower control unit (upright 5-6 prong plug in unit). As always, check sjmautotechnik.com for guidance.

Most likely a bad blower motor control unit(resistor) located on the top of the evaporator box. As pointed out above SJM has a procedure for testing by jumping the wires.
