Car stalls when coming to a stop
OK, background: This is an 86 5000 S Avant (if it matters), 5 speed. 305K miles. New plugs, distributor cap, plugs, newer wires. Fuel pump is less than 100K. Full tank of gas. Never had any drivability problems in a quarter million miles.
My better half was driving the car this afternoon and reports that it cut off each time she approached a stop. Drives fine otherwise...
I'm on a business trip 1000 miles away. Seems like the car acts up only when she's driving (alternator, cracked converter, etc.) Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Yeah tell her to push the clutch in when coming to a stop.
Only kidding your decel valve is sticking in the open position. This is causing a huge vacuum leak. Similar to opening the oil cap which will also cause the engine to stall.

c'mon guys...it MIGHT be the decel valve. better test some stuff.
it could also be the throttle switch. if the typical soldering problems occur with the throttle switch, then the idle switch will be out, hence the stalling issue when approaching a stop. i had this same problem, got a new TS from SJM, and with in 6 months that one went bad and i was back to the same problem. after all, the throttle switch is what tells the decel valve to operate! ;-)
check you www.sjmautotechnik.com for all your trouble shooting tips. it will tell you how to cycle your ECU output tests and also how to check the throttle switch to see if it's working.
good luck!

I second the throttle switch guess, BTDT
when coming to a stop the car dies becasue it doesnt go into idle control, and not letting air by to keep car idling. I've dealt with this a couple times now. Instead of soldering find one of the newer type idle switches. But I think the 5ks may have a different switch all togather from the 5ktq but still has the switch i'm sure. Anyhow that my guess.

Throttle switch. That sounds reasonable. My MR2 was known for that problem, but hadn't heard that this was an issue with the 5000. Of course, at 300K, I guess I shouldn't be surprized when anything fails!
