Changing rear main crank seal
Need a bit of help with a big job I'm doing on the 5kq. I'm in the middle of changing the clutch plate and throw out bearing and thinking I should also change the rear crankshaft seal owing to the very oily state of the inside of the bell housing. It looks like there are two ways to do it.
First is to get the seal - 068103051G and pry out the old and tap in the new one.
Second way is to get the new seal which comes already fitted in the aluminium flange - 068103171F.
If I go the second way do I also need to change the oil pan gasket seeing as this rear seal flange sits on the back of the pan.
Any reason why I shouldn't go the first cheaper route, is it difficult to swap out the large rear main seal and get the new one in without damaging it?

Replacing the oil pan gasket shouldn't be necessary unless the gasket is really crispy and breaks off when removing the old flange. The old flange can be pressed off evenly by using some longer bolts as it is threaded for this. Regardless of replacing the oil pan gasket or not I use some black RTV on the mating surfaces between the flange and pan. Note regarding the new style seal if it is teflon PTFE (no spring) it gets installed dry no lube on the seal or crank. I replace the paper gasket behind the sealing flange too.

Well I've decided to go with a new flanged seal and paper gasket. I'll also replace the pan gasket seal as I decided to have a look in there while the engine is on the stand, as you do. Still waiting on parts so this job is now in its 3rd week. Amazing how quickly these jobs can escalate.

OK so changed the oil seal now. In the end I only got the seal and after removing the flange pressed it 'carefully' into the flange surround piece. I also changed the pan gasket although I could have probably reused the old one. In addition I changed the thick paper gasket which sits behind the main seal flange although I may have been able to reuse the original. So now waiting on clutch parts before I can refit the engine.
