engine speed sensor, rpm sensor, reference sensor, crank position sensor;
so with my problem getting worse on my v8 (ie., the car doesn't start after its hot, rpm tach DOES NOT bounce while cranking) i'm just looking for the correct sensor to replace. I found that 034motorsport actually has some of the most reasonably priced sensors and according to Ron W. the 5ktq sensors are cheaper and work. but when searching, the closest thing that I think i need in their catalog is the reference sensor.
here's the link to the one i think i need for my V8. I think this is what we call the rpm sensor. right?

Jeez prices are out of control on these..
since I was looking at them a few months ago. There was one you could get for around $70.
This looks like the cheapest one you can get now. Just has a longer wire than the V8 sensor. I wonder if a passat sensor would work. They look very similar but only cost about 20 bucks.<ul><li><a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CRANKSHAFT-SENSOR-AUDI-100-90-A4-A6-22L-2-8L-92-98_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ33689QQihZ013QQitemZ 230166032071QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW">http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/CRANKSHAFT-SENSOR-AUDI-100-90-A4-A6-

Get the 5000 sensors...
And loop the extra wire out of the way (I zip-tied it to the vaccuum T that goes to the cruise control, o2 sensor wiring is looped there too).
Replace both sensors at the same time.
It's not the worst speed & ref sensors I've changed, but not the easiest to get to. Be sure the engine is cool. To the left of your hand is the aluminum block, to the right is the header, and above your hand is an aluminum mount (I think?) that likes to retain heat.
Two 10mm bolts and it's out. I used a small (2-3") box-end ratcheting wrench. There didn't seem to be enough room to work in a 1/4" ratchet, but maybe there was.

I've done the ones I've done with 1/4 inch ratchet & an extension...
....but my exhaust wasn't fully cold 8-0..so I left a big scar on my hand from it...& still have the scar..my man hood test...OUCH.

Keep a couple of gallons of water in the trunk. And when in need drench the sensors to cool them down, should start right up.. it may help out in a pinch, til the new ones are in. ;-)

Re: engine speed sensor, rpm sensor, reference sensor, crank position sensor;
Just leaving the hood open for a while helps. When I first experienced a dying Ignition Reference Sensor (the one causing hot restart problems), the car wouldn't start after stopping to fill up with gas. Leaving the hood open about 10 minutes let it cool enough to get it to start again. I got so I was opening the hood before I took off the gas cap.
