This was an auto....You could probably pour sand into the 016F manual and drive it for 20 yrs....Super robust gearbox. You posses one of the 72 or so 016F's that were imported for this car only and as far as I know, nothing else had this, so it's a keeper. One of the most badass trannys built by Audi. Tom

nice pic of the fuel filter. i did some investigating and determined that while the filter old (made in '06) it had only experienced around 40k miles of use. still, cutting it up revealed that it was in fact not clean, but nowhere near as bad as the one in your photo.
so, for fun, i climbed into the trunk and took a crack at looking at the fuel pump. i also wanted to drain some gas out of the car so that i can put fresh gas in it when i return from summer vacation, and couldn't get my hand-operated fuel pump down the filler tube, so into the tank i went. things actually looked pretty good down there, but i didn't pull the pump out all the way to look at the strainer, so while a missed opportunity to verify a clean strainer, but i feel pretty good that i can now replace it down the road if fuel problems re-emerge.

Next time you have your head in that hole, verify which of the 2 different pumps you have. The fatter Bosch 040 has a banjo bolt and a flying saucer looking sound dampener on top and 2 terminals, and the skinnier VDO 8A0906091G has hose clamp and connector. Many 5-speeds, mine included, have the VDO for whatever reason.

interesting. i feel like mine looked more like the pump on the right, but i cant say for sure.
do you recommend changing the fluid in the transmission on a 5-speed? i havent read much about whether or not people change the fluid in their manual gearboxes.

One on right is way more common. Defiantly a yes on the changing of fluid(since I'm guessing you don't know when it was last changed). Verify the fill plug comes out before draining. Mine is stuck in there and stripped so gonna need someone to weld a hex in there(with some kind of midgit welder as there's no room). Book says use GL-4 but apparently there are modern synthetics that meet VW/Audi specs that are GL-5. Mine was filled with Redline just before I bought it(he forgot to mention the messed up plug). I also have note that says Fuchs Titan Sintofluid 75w-90/3.2 quarts. The differential oil is GL-5 90W. Book says filled for life but I don't believe in that concept.

Hey Terry, so which dealership do you own?....Ha. Personally, I avoid the dealer unless its something I can't get elsewhere, and since AOA gave up on this car years ago(even though its the car that saved them after the 60 minutes "unintended acceleration" thing), not much left at dealer and simply can't imagine buying gear lube from them for whatever it is($130 guess). The book says G50 which was superseded by spec 050(which I believe was your link). ALL of the modern G-4 lubes meet or exceed this. I put Redline in the 86 Saab SPG when we got it(had been dealer serviced prior), and with 180K on it, felt like someone rebuilt tranny. I was happy when I bought 5-speed and Audi tech I got it from had just refilled with Redline 75/90($45/gallon now). I did some research and Scott at Advanced Automation was the reason for my note on the Fuchs Titan Sintofluid 75w80 and thats what he recommends/sells and being the guy I'd send my tranny to(if parts were not NLA,thank you again AOA)....as soon as I get that fill plug removed, gonna go Fuchs....Many of the modern G-5 Synthetic lubes lack the sulfur that ate brass(syncros), so are compatible theoretically and if says G-4/G-5 are most likely fine. My Lago auto car came "filled for life" with original Dexron(had sperm whale oil in it, no lie)....What idiot at Audi thought that was a good idea. All 3 parts cars were because of failed trannys, all because nobody(even the dealer) changed the fluid.....ANY new fluid(as long as it won't eat syncros) is better than whats in there.....That's my theory.

Oh, and not sure why you posted the bob article as in the end nobody on there was gonna buy the G05. In fact that entire website is devoted to people wanting an equal or better fluid to avoid getting hosed at dealer. I run Mobil DTE 32 excell 10 instead of pentosin in the steering(people on bob have verified specs) as its $80/5 gallon bucket and with 2 leaky cars that I like to flush steering every 2 yrs, would go broke buying at dealer. Barely thicker and only noticed issue was in Blue River CO(11000 ft in winter). groaned a bit but most cars groan a bit at 11000.....Been running it for 14 years and love having a bucket when I need a pint
