problem with '88 5kt
 

ok, so i'm looking at a '88 5kt (auto, but that can be solved). only problem is that it recently developed a problem. put your foot in the gas, and keep it there, it'll run to 3800rpm or so then drop to 1000rpm or so, and repeat until you lift your foot off the gas. car will not rev beyond 3800+/- even when being driven. few days ago, current owner ran it at 80-85mph for 2hrs to/from his destination with no problems...

car has 192k miles, mint except for two small dings (interior is 10/10, body is 9-9.5/10).

any ideas?

car didn't exhibit problem as of yesterday...just started doing it as of this AM...

note: says it feels like fuel cut off is being hit...turbo pulls good/strong, no odd noises at all, car is "perfect" except for the 3800rpm issue...

I have an 88 5k cs and I have the same problem. When my bar meter goes past 1.3 the engine starts to sound like it running really hard and if you continue to accelerate the engine will cut off for a second and drop revs (to around 1500), rev up and do it again until you let off the gas. My bar meter used to stop and hold at 1.2, but now it just goes past 1.2 and up to 1.7. I have not upgraded any thing on the car. Any ideas of what it could be?
