just wondering if this is how Audi did it or if mine is broken...but when ever i turn on the headlights the backing light for my little computer screen on the 87 5k cs tq goes out. making it very useless at night. is that just mine or is that how all of them are?

Interior lighting is supposed to dim when the exterior lights are turned on. I don't know whether there are different bulbs or the original bulbs are variable. I also don't know what the dimming mechanism is, but it might be the culprit too. Do your HVAC head lights dim when you turn on the headlights? Or do they go out too???

I can't remember if the later version of the trip computer that sits in the dash has a little thumb wheel that you turn from left to right, like the earlier 85 5k versions had (they had the larger screen version)
If it dose have that little dimmer under the screen, It's prolly not getting very good connections, try turning it left to right while putting a little up or downward pressure on it, aswell as apply a little pressure in the direction your went when it hits the end of it's travel. I've seen most of the 85's that do have this wheel have this problem, and you won't see any of the back lighting when you turn on your running/headlights.
If it dosn't have this scroll wheel under the screen then, yeah I do belive there are 2 bulbs in the trip unit for the later ones aswell as the 85's did. I'm sure the one that has the red condom over it is burnt out.
Cheers,
Michael.
