holly mother... this was dug up from the grave
so we are safe to assume that you changed the trans fluid and filter?
also, as you have mentioned, check the trans mounts, they wont cause hard shift, but they improve quality of the ride and are cheap.
poor MPGs... pull any codes, check all the vacuum hoses for possible cracks and replace, also 02 sensor may need replacement

Thanks for your reply, this long after the initial post.

Yup, I changed the transmissions oil filter and oil on a sunny day a few months back, didn't make a difference though.

I also tried pulling the blink codes, but i all i got was 4 4 4 4 (no errors to report) so effectively nothing it wrong with the car, go figure?!

It has a sort of humming (singing) at 1000rpm to say 1500/1800rpm when in neutral and slighty reving. It's hard to describe, could that be a vacuum leak?

with the trans, it sounds like its time for a repair shop, or replacement. (or you could find a manual and try to trouble shoot the problem) or you could convert to a manual trans
and you confused the crap out of me with your engine singing problem )))

I've come to the conclusion that spending any more money on this old gas guzzling POS is a complete waste of time. Unfortunately noone wants to purchase it. So I'm at a loss.

I've been looking at a newer A4 from 2002, with the 1.9 TDi engine. (130hp spec) good car?

it looks like you are across the pond somewhere, otherwise i have a friend with an automatic thats in good shape.
you could probably do a conversion to a manual for around $500-700
TDIs are good motors, but you have to stay on top of things on those
