Default 1988 audi 90 2.3 crank seal

So same audi with the thermostat issue, the kid I bought it from said he had replaced the valve cover gasket so he said he had the oil leak fixed but I've been driving it and it can't hold oil to save it's life. I Just had a good mechanic look at it and he said it's probably the crank seal, if anyone here has replaced one before what should i look for and how hard could it be. Thank you

front or rear? as the front your have to pop off the t-belt. rear is a nightmare and you have to either remove the trans or the engine.
find out for certain where its coming from, wash the engine, then go from there.

Default Front

It's the front for sure, I took it apart a little and found missing/broken bolts from the block. I don't know if this would cause the oil leak or if it's still the crank seal. Any advice would be helpful thank you.

Teo of em in between the belts<br/>

broken bolts can cause leaks, but again, wash your engine and then take a look where the leak is coming from

Default Where to start with your work plan research...

Hi Luke,

Here are some ideas you might use to begin to develop a repair plan. Whether you are doing this yourself or with help, the repair will require the application of this info. For brevity's sake, I will simply list where you should look and why:

a,) Bentley Publishers (official factory repair manual);
b.) Blaufergnugen Manitowic, WI (complete timing-belt, water-pump & crank-seal repair kit (not saying that is your issue BTW, but currently on sale?) and special tool rental ;
c.) Huw's (human speakers) audi site write-up on the above 3 related tasks (with photos) that, as you may already realize, should be done together if there is any doubt as to the age of these components and or to make best use of an intrusive procedure.

Also slightly related WRT oil leak finding technique, look for "austinado16" 's thread on the old A6 forum here re his repair of an oil-pump leak.

Hope this helps.
